Setting up the Proctorio integration

Proctorio is a remote proctoring tool with a range of features including browser lockdown, ID verification, and webcam monitoring. Technically, it integrates using the LTI 1.3 protocol, but given the narrowness of its use (it's meant only for tests, obviously), it is set up as a built-in integration rather than an LTI tool.

After setting it up, faculty at your school can use it to proctor tests.

Proctorio requires the use of a browser extension which must be installed by all users taking the test. If a test uses Proctorio, students will be unable to start it until the Proctorio extension has been launched.

Setting up the integration

To set up Proctorio, start by contacting Proctorio Support and ask to set up an LTI 1.3 integration with Populi. They will provide you the following four URLs you will need to input in Populi in the following step.

  • OpenID Connect URL
  • Launch URL
  • JWK Keyset URL
  • Redirect URI

Armed with these URLs, you can finish setup in Populi.

  1. Go to Account & Settings > Account Settings > Integrations.
  2. Click Add an integration.
  3. Select Proctorio from the drop-down of built-in integrations.
  4. Enter the URLs you received from Proctorio.
  5. Choose whether to use global settings or test-level settings (more on this below).
  6. Click Save.

Global exam settings vs. test-level settings

After setting up the integration, you'll want to decide whether to allow each test to control its own Proctorio settings or to impose global settings for all tests.

  • Certain settings (for example, manual checking of IDs by a Proctorio agent) are only available if they are a part of your school's Proctorio features. You'll need to contact Proctorio to find out exactly what features are available in your school's account.
  • To choose between global- and test-level controls:
    1. Click Proctorio in the list of integrations in Account > Integrations.
    2. Choose from the options in the Proctorio settings control drop-down.
    3. If you choose Global..., make your selections from the settings list. There's a bunch of them!
    4. If you choose Allow each test..., each feature may be turned on/off as desired for each proctored test.
    5. Click Save to finish.
