Futuristic default date for to-dos

When I set up a due date for a to-do I can type in the date without the year and it will default to the current year. However if it is still December 2016 and I want to set up a to-do for January 2017, if I just type in Jan 2 it defaults to Jan 2, 2016 and shows up as overdue. It would be great if the default was set to choose the next instance of that date whether that is still in the current year or the next year.
