It would be helpful to add a comment box next to the student's attendance record (present, tardy, absent) that can be used to store relevant information to to that record. For example, if they were absent but later marked excused, the person changing the record can indicate why like, "Sick, doctors note on file." Or whatever. Here is an example from Moodle:
