Under Home | Links, I'd like to have the option to set areas and/or links so that only active students, staff, and faculty could access them. I'm posting referring URLs to paid databases there. Thanks! Mark

Mark Bruffey For clarification, here's what I'm trying to do. Students currently enrolled in courses need access to paid databases. Folk who are still students but not currently enrolled (say for a semester or a year), should not have access. I've linked all databases through Populi | Links because it's easy and efficient. Some links provide authentication purely by referring URL. I'd like to deny access to "Links" for students who should not have access--even if student by student. (We are a small institution.) Of course, I wouldn't know the best way to implement it in the back-end of Populi. Perhaps make it possible to exclude access by a tag (NO_LINKS) or something like that? Mark

Adam Sentz Mark Bruffey - Sounds like you just need role permissions for link lists instead of just the current staff/facutly or everyone options. Does that sound right? The only potential issue I can see would be that someone can have an active student role, but not be actually enrolled in a class currently.

Mark Bruffey Hi Adam! Yes, the difficulty that I'm trying to address is precisely what you have described. We have some active students who are not currently taking a course. Our deactivation policy allows at least one semester (if not a year) to pass in which the student takes no courses. So we have unenrolled but "active" students "hanging around" in Populi. I need a way to regulate the access available to active students.

Adam Sentz Mark Bruffey - That's a tricky one. I'm not sure how you'd end access for someone who already had the authenticated link without changing the url or token frequently. Thanks for clarifying!

Mark Bruffey Access eventually times out for those authenticated via referring URL. Each user must initiate a new session only from the link I have provided on the links page. So it's really only the referring URLs that concern me at the moment. Some links that I provide also require username/pwd authorization after the link is followed. I'm not too worried about those b/c I can cut access by asking the vendor to remove the user/pwd.
What I'm asking for now varies from my original request, I realize. I'm trying to figure out how to leave access to Populi as open as possible for any latent student who might want to enroll in the future while observing the licensing agreements for our paid databases.

Mark Bruffey Bumping this request with more remarks, seeing that 1098-T access has brought the issue to the fore at the moment. I'd like an *option* to restrict access to Home | Links. I don't want inactive students to see that tab. I want only active students and staff (of course) to see it. Why? I put links to our paid databases behind that tab. It's ridiculously easy to manage that way. Why is it a problem? Inactive students still need access to forms such as 1098-T, etc. At the moment, inactive students also have access to Home | Links. I don't want that. Thanks!
