It would be nice to see a list of the names of all the occupants of a given dorm room. This would help us manage students' requests for roommates, as well as being able to know which students are in which rooms, at aglance. It would also be very helpful to be able to designate one of the occupants as an RA for the room or floor.

Robert Damon Yes, I add a strong AMEN to this comment. While the Meal and Housing Plans are find for finance to manage, our Student Development Office would like manage the specific room assignments for dorms, both to know who is in what room but also with changes each term, the management of roommates and such. We do some events based on room/dorm assignments, as well as some notifications specific to those assignments; having a manageable listing is a BIG need and one of the things missing from this excellent software.

Titus Hofer Yes please!

Dennis Hixson Yes please
-
Dennis Hixson We also need the staff to be able to assign rooms without them having billing privileges. For that matter it would be great to have some ability to customize user roles.
Thanks
Dennis

James OK, the good news is that, if you're already using room plans and assigning rooms in Billing, this should be working for you now! The bad news is that it *is* currently tied to student billing (if you're not using our Billing module, as a workaround you can add a $0 room plan which will allow you to assign rooms to students).
"Facilities" has moved from the Account bar back to College Management, and when you view a building you can now see occupants for each room as of a given date (you can also see current occupants when viewing the individual rooms).
Once you assign a student to a room in a particular term (Profile -> Financial -> By Term -> Add a room plan), if you go to his or her profile while that term is active, you'll see a new line like "Room: 104 In West Dormitory" under Student > Student Information. Clicking the link should open a popup with basic information about the room, including other current occupants.
In future, we plan on detaching room occupancy from the Financial section as much as possible (so perhaps a new Student Services role could *just* add room plans, without any other financial privileges, and manage room occupancy regardless of whether you're using our Billing module).
Enjoy!

James P.S. If you're not using our Billing module, when you set up a dummy room plan you'll need to enter it as costing $1. You'll then need to delete this $1 pending charge generated when adding it to students - sorry I gave the impression you could add a $0 fee in the above post.

Peet Strydom Hi James,
I've tried following your instructions to assign dorm rooms to students, but when I follow Profile -> Financial -> By Term -> Add a room plan I do not get a new link to add the rooms that I've set up in facilities.
Am I missing something or is there a different way to assign dorm rooms?
thx

James Hi Peet,
Hmm... I was going to suggest attaching a room plan to each room in Facilities that students could occupy, but looks like you've already done that. Went to a student's profile and everything seems to be working properly... if you're still having problems, open a support ticket and we'll look into it!
Cheers,
James

Ben Cochrane We're just working through the process of getting ready for our new semester and this issue came up.
I'm not sure I understand why specific room assignments are tied to the Finance role? Our Student Life department handles room designations but have nothing to do with billing/finances.
Are there any plans to make room assignments/facilities issues their own user role?

Ben Austin When we move a student to a new room, how can we change that on populi?
