Option to be either be public or private... could create their own calendar, etc.

Adam Sentz Official comment Groups are here! Announcement on the blog. Discussion over in the User forum.

Eddie Grigg We are trying to determine if we can do a "community discussion." For example, as we prepare to use Populi for online courses we have a need to communicate with adjunct faculty from various sections of the country. We request the development of a feature (if it does not already exist) that would allow discussion groups - faculty, support staff, administrations - board - that could be formed to discuss and explore certain topics. Faculty training could be improved if we could form a Faculty Community Group and have lessons, discussions, etc just like a class, but hopefully without the cost of creating an actual class. There is a need to train faculty and test their Populi skills. We have one faculty member that is excellent in the use of social media in her class and we would like to have her demonstrate for other faculty, just like she does within her classes. Is there a simple method to form a class/group of non-students?

Deborah Forteza This is a great idea! I can think of ways that we also could use this kind of feature.

Nichole Moore I agree with the "place" for faculty to connect, but would want it to be much more than a course homepage. I would love to have the following:
- a faculty chat "feed" to communicate updated info
- a place to post our yearly course schedule which would sync with the faculty member's calendar
- link options for books or websites we would like to recommend to our faculty
- files to be shared regarding training or courses
- view of all facutly as a thumbnail (with the course they teach) with direct email link
Love that Populi is always moving towards improvement. I appreciate your consideration of the request. :)

Allan Crowson This would be great, and would alleviate my having to keep other groups around in Google Apps, etc. I would love to be able to leverage Populi in this area!
-
Christal Fehr I also see this as being a great idea and I'm thrilled it's in the planning stages. We would use this in situations where we need to share information with all students... a place to post links or forms or other information that all students need access to that's not specifically related to a course. I've been using the Files system a bit for this, but it's limited in that I can only share files, not other types of information (mostly website links). I could see this being beneficial if the groups were based on roles, but also on tags.

Faculty Test This sounds like a great idea. We would like to have full course-style functionality for clubs, groups, and informational units that can be shared with all Populi members without it appearing on a transcript. Examples of classes or pages we'd like are:
- New Student Orientation
- Student Government
- Faculty Senate
- Garden Club
- etc.
-
Chris Chiacchierini We need an online gathering place for clubs/organizations such as student association, student run clubs, student/staff/faculty shared committees, etc. The functionality of the course structure would work great for clubs/organizations home pages; however, we would like them to be independent of academic records.
Wish list features:
- allow enrollment to non students (even alumni)
- not be tied into specific meeting times so as not to appear on people's calendars
- not show up on transcripts
- be accessible from a menu on the dashboard, so that each user could see which club/org pages they were "enrolled" in
- allow restricted and guest access options

Ann Rill This is one of the things we miss from our previous LMS. We were able to set up Communities where certain groups of students or faculty could communicate, share files, etc. Looking forward to this being implemented.

Travis Johnson I added the below suggestion a few days ago under the title "Board of Directors Role/Tab" which is similar to this group/club suggestion.
I am looking for a way for to disseminate docs and other information to our BOD. Creating a BOD role (or something synonymous), tab or whatever, would provide us a way to place data on the shared files but with role restrictions. BOD could access the information at anytime and in one central location. Also, having a a platform where BOD's can communicate privately would be helpful. Limiting BOD accessibility for other populi users (students, faculty, staff, etc.) would be imperative. Our BOD members have individual user ids for purposes of badge creation, but are not currently active.

Sam Horowitz One of the reasons we are still holding onto our much-maligned current LMS is because it allows for the whole community--students (even students not currently enrolled for whatever reason), alumni, faculty, and staff--to have forums in which they can interact. That's above and beyond course-like interest groups but in the same vein. We need a place outside of official courses where people can interact. In the meantime, we'll keep using the API to sync data with [REDACTED TO PROTECT THE GUILTY].

Wendy Pierce This is a great idea. Students, alumni, teachers etc. would love to interact and share ideas. My wish list:
1.User opt in/out
2. Scheduling Options for admin and users, i.e. boards could be made available during certain days or even hours.
3. Moderation of posts
4. Separate from academics
Thank you for looking into this.
-
Gabriel Sieben I would love this!! I hope it comes soon...
-
Dave Thomas Really looking forward to this.
-
Daniel Davis We would love this addition. I would also say with the Board of Directors comment that a polling feature added to allow members to vote and have those recorded on an issue would be helpful.
-
Randy Siebold Agree and agree! I don't want the extra hassle of going outside of Populi for these, but now have no choice. -
Grace Miriam Usala, RSM Yes, my faculty request the following - A departmental tab of sorts:
"What would be very helpful to me in Populi is the ability to have a section where I could send group mailings to faculty just in my department, post documents and allow multiple users to amend them, make targeted announcements to them etc. I get the impression that would be fairly simple; is that so & am I giving you enough info for at least a start?"
Thanks!
-
Mark Kelley I would like to have a group for my faculty so that we could post informal recent reserach learnings or reports from professional meetings we have attended.
-
Ann Rill I see that adding groups has been planned since at least April of 2013, according to https://support.populiweb.com/entries/23685998-Board-of-Directors-Role-Tab. Do you have any idea as to when this will be in place? We, too, are in need of a place where we can share documents with a closed group of administration and board members.
-
Adam Sentz @Ann - I wish I could give you a date because we've been wanting to add this for so long. We've put a decent bit of work into it already, but at the moment we (those of us who would be building Groups) are focused on improving areas of Populi that already exist, but need more work to continue to meet the needs of our customers.
-
Sherry Davis Any update on this feature?
-
Adam Sentz @Sherry - Nothing beyond what I wrote in June. We're still working on something else, but we'll get there.
-
Dr. Beemer Any update on this feature? It would meet a lot of current needs we have!
-
Adam Sentz @Dr. Beemer - Nothing to report, but everything I've written previously still stands.
-
Mark Leonard I am casting my vote for this feature as well.
-
Carlos Marin Looking forward to this!
-
Mark Leonard Woo hoo!!!!
