It would be lovely to be able to customize the Student ID Card, specific to our institution with information we determine and layout. We also would love to choose how many ID's per page.
Thoughts?

We would be fine with the student's preferred name and last name.
I agree that it would be wonderful to have the full academic year (2011-2012) printed on the card rather than just the year it was printed. I'm about to print cards for new students this semester, and looks like they'll be able to use them until December, even though they are only a student until April.
Anyway... one other issue I just came across is that I can't seem to select only the students that are new to this term. The filter doesn't allow that, so I'm not sure what to do outside of printing all student cards again and only using the 6 that I actually need. Any suggestions?
@Christal - You can export one at a time from their profile. Since you only need six that shouldn't be too bad.
Thanks Adam. That works for me for now, though it still seems like the ability to filter would be useful... you know... some day :)... especially since I don't think we have a way here to print just one card... would need to print a full sized paper for each card... I think. Anyway, I did find a way to get them printed already, so we'll see what happens next year.
Can we have the information displayed in different orders. I want the entire text moved up so we can insert another ID that we use internally. Also, can we have the date changed to the student's expected graduation (or expiration date.)
Hello, adding onto Steve's question above, for the date, would there be the possibility of modifying the date to one of the following options?
Expires: _ _ _ _ (Date four years from when the card is made)
Student as of 2012
Student 2012 - 2016 (or whatever time frame is needed - there could be a two year or four year option)
I know this was discussed a good amount at the beginning of the thread, and the answer was no at the time, but I was wondering if it had been changed. Also, since students loose and/or need their cards reprinted, would there be a way to back date a card if one of the above options was implemented? Or enabling the export to be editable would allow for manually changing dates that need to be back dated.
Thank you for considering,
Heidi
Here's an updated template
EDIT: You can customize your ID cards in Populi now. You can still use this as a starting point, but there's a lot more flexibility now.
@Adam: Thanks! what's different on this template?
@Carlos - Nothing of substance. I just tried to make it a little more clear where you shouldn't put things in your design.
Mr. Sentz, I am new to this thread. Is it possible to feature ID cards with printing on the back? I was thinking it would be good to add on the backs of these cards, a small logo 'top center' and on the bottom, a centered note that reads, "This card is the property of X X school. If found please return to Admissions Office at XX school"
@Philip - Sorry it took me a while to respond; I was out of the office. Double-sided ID cards isn't currently something that Populi handles, but It seems like you could just have your own template for the back of the card and just print it on the back of your ID cards.
To be able to customize the cards would be a big help. As is, our card has a huge white space with nothing on it. We'd love to put the logo there, instead of the itty bitty logo currently on the card. Plus it would be nice to enlarge the pic and name.
@Christopher - The background image of your card is already customizable, just not the info that's printed out or the placement of that info. If you aren't able to edit the Photoshop template yourself you can just let us know what changes you'd like via a support request and we can help you out.
We were delighted with how easy it is to produce ID Cards in Populi. The fact that the number in the barcode is not the Student ID, however, would make the feature unusable for our institution. Our library accounts are based on the Student ID # and require a barcode scan for checkout, etc. Has there been any move to allow the barcode to represent something other than the Populi ID?
Let's repost that comment outside of our dummy student account:
"We were delighted with how easy it is to produce ID Cards in Populi. The fact that the number in the barcode is not the Student ID, however, would make the feature unusable for our institution. @Justin - Given the broad range of types of student IDs the we import into Populi it would be impossible to guarantee that they would always work as a barcode. So, instead Populi uses a unique identifier, the Populi ID number, that will always work well as a barcode. This number is exportable so that you can import it for use in another system. Additionally, non-student library Patrons do not have student ID numbers which could be problematic.
In that case, is it possible to customize our Populi IDs to be nine digits long instead of seven? Our library requires nine-digit codes for student accounts.
@Justin - Unfortunately that is not possible. I don't suppose it would work to add leading zeros in your library system to get up to 9 digits? Or there's always Populi's built-in library system if you think that might work for you.
We have resolved the issue with our library, but would now like to customize the appearance of our ID cards. What is the current best way to do this? I've seen the discussion above. Has anything changed?
@Justin - ID card customization still works the same way. Please submit a support request and I will send you the PSD of you current card.
You can now customize your ID cards in Admin > ID Card Templates. We set everyone up with 6 starter templates that match the previous Student, Staff, or Faculty ID cards in either one-per-page or nine-per-page layouts. If you have a dedicated card printer, or only ever print single cards you can probably go ahead and delete the multi-card templates. Check 'em out!
@Adam, It seems like this question was asked in the past, but is there any way to customize the date on the ID cards yet? It would be a lot easier to have a graduation date or expiration date on there instead of just the current year. Students have been asking us to reprint them every year since it only shows the current year on the card.
@Jennifer - With the new system of templates it's pretty simple to put in a text field with an expiration date. We don't have a way to do that dynamically yet as the only year variable are Academic Year (e.g. 2015-2016) and Current Year (e.g. 2016). I've thought about having something like Current Year +1, Current Year +2, etc., but for now you can just put in "Expires 2018" or whatever you like and update it as needed.
Current Year +1, Current Year +2, etc are now available for ID cards.
Hi. I liked the simplicity on the ID Card Templates page.
Yes, it would be nice to access any data using its label, like !END_DATE! or !ACADEMICS.END_DATE!, etc.
We have created our own Background Image to use for creating our ID cards; however, when I try to upload this image into the "Background Image" field, it says that the file is too large. I was wondering what the parameters are for uploading background images ourself? Or do we need to send our image to you for you to adjust or edit?
@Heather - Send me what you have in a support request and I'll take a look.
