As a teacher, I'd like to be able to see what the student sees.
Once, I did get the administrator to add a "Joe Student" for me, so that I could log in as Joe, but it's a bit involved to constantly ask administration.
Could there be some way to simply click on a "student view" of a page?
Hi there...any updates on giving every client at least one free student account for testing purposes?
Seems weird that we would be charged to problem solve issues with a product we are paying for.

I would like to add our name to this pile. This would be a really useful feature. One of the earlier messages mentions that it has been worked on bit by bit for a few years. Is there a current status?
I think you have made the faculty and student interface so similar, but it would give our faculty confidence that what they post shows up as they expected to the student.
Having one free student account for testing purposes seems like it would address this issue with less technical work. We have any number of different things that students have issues with so I don't think we could have a narrow scope on what the view should be. Most are on the LMS side of the product.
By comparison, the open-source Moodle LMS, which we previously used, had the ability to switch into any role (if your role was privileged enough to do that). That was tremendously helpful, but maybe would be harder for you to implement.
@Clark - Courses have been rewritten into our new framework which makes this kind of thing a lot more feasible, but this would still be a pretty substantial project. We get how useful it would be for faculty.
@Evan - User accounts can only be used by one person at a time so you'd need at least one per person that wanted to test things as a student. Also, you probably don't want a bunch of fake students permanently enrolled in courses so you'd have to delete their enrollments anyway which would be pretty much the same way you can test as a student now.
STUDENT COURSE VIEW
I hope you have made some progress with allowing the administration/tech support to see the student's view as we field calls. I see these requests have been coming in since at least 2010 so I wanted the status. Enrolling students in and out of classes causes a nightmare for our business office. Please help.
@Paula - This feature request is for impersonating a generic student in a course, not impersonating an actual student user. For the purposes of technical support it might be worth looking into screen sharing software.
It would be so helpful to have an option for student view so we know what the student sees. Students often have questions and want us to walk them through different things, but because we can't view it as they do, that is hard to do.
Please add this feature, Moodle, and Canvas have this, it is a necessary feature for clarity for professors -- we shouldn't need to log out of our account and into another account to do our work as teachers. Thank you!
I just read through all these requests dating back to 2010. I hope this is something Populi is working on implementing soon! It would be great to be able to toggle between a "Student View" or even a "preview" option. Because I see everything, I can't fully tell what has actually gone "live" and what students are/are not able to see.
I also would like to know where things stand in regard to this request. I understand that it would be quite a feat coding wise, but given how long customers have been asking for this, the number of comments this thread (and I am sure others) have, and the fact that other LMS systems have this feature, I really think this needs to be a top priority ahead of other changes.
I'll add my "Yes" vote to this. There are many problems with creating dummy student accounts that affect real statistics, not to mention the extra work involved, just so professors and administrators can figure out what students see. I'm often asking real students, "Hey, can you login to your class and let me see what the screen looks like from your perspective?" This affects everything from course design to accuracy of student support, so hopefully Populi can continue to work toward building in this feature.
This is a huge ask for our faculty. Every major LMS has this ability. We shouldn't have to manage a bunch of fake accounts, plus risk being charged for "enrolled" fake accounts so that faculty can view their courses as a student views it. Please add this feature.
I'll add my voice to the list requesting this feature. I do not have admin ability to add a 'test' student. I need to be able to see my course from a student's view point in order to respond to questions. Please add this feature.
Adam Sentz -- This feature would not only be useful for faculty but also for Registrars and anyone else providing student support. If I need a screenshot that shows what everything looks like from a student's perspective, my only choice at this point is to ask a student to login and send me a screenshot.
I agree as Registrar. Students call/email me, not for within a course question, but sometimes "I can't find my course", or "why don't I see this and that". Canvas has the "mask as student" feature where you go in as the specific student and see what they see. This is very helpful.
Moodle also lets you mask as a student. We used it frequently.
Ultimately, adding this feature would save your staff support time, since I have often filed support tickets about things that I couldn't verify for students since I wasn't able to see it from their view.
Some of our students are not very technical, and so they are not able to take screenshots.
This would be helpful on so many levels. This thread is from years ago and it seems like the need hasn't died down at all. When you are walking students through how to navigate Populi, it would be helpful to see what they are seeing without having to do any screen sharing nonsense.

I agree. Student view is a standard option with most other learning management systems. Why is this so hard for Populi designers to figure out?
So I am would like to ask one more time where things stand on this? I have several recent comments. This has been a long time request and to my understanding is relatively common in other LMS. I sincerely hope that this currently being worked on given how popular the request seems to be.

I have had several requests from faculty and staff to have the ability to change to student view when they are logged into their account and not have to create some makeshift "student" account. Please develop this function like other programs have available. It would sure help me when a faculty or staff member comes to me with a complaint and I can see from a student's view. I just want to echo how important this feature is to faculty. I just had an incident where students were not able to view the assignments I had posted; it turned out to be a pretty easy fix, but because I couldn't access a student view, troubleshooting was super complicated.
