We would like to begin acquiring e-books this fiscal year and there is no option currently for cataloging e-books in Populi Library.
I am suggesting 2 things:
1. That "electronic holding" is added to the 'Type' section in the cataloging module.
2. That a 'URL' field is added to the list of available fields so that students can link to remote databases containing ebooks and our server (where we will store theses and digitized books)

Great idea! More and more e-books are becoming popular.
This is mandatory at our University. All of our holdings are electronic so books and journals (or at least a link to a journal's PDF).

Insight University in Santa Fe, NM. We are just starting our Doctoral Program in Transformational Leadership. We're using a blended learning approach with the classroom portion to be one four-day face-to-face session each semester. Because all of our students come from a distance, we're using digital assets. We have collected a number of PDF journal articles, dissertations and books.
Currently there is no way in Populi to do a live link to the document stored on our web site. We can insert a link in the Abstract, but a student would have to cut and paste the link into his or her browser to access the digital item. If Populi added a field that allowed a live link, this would solve the issue.
I would also like to add that the ability to directly attach electronic resources to a library resource would be amazing. We have a lot of pdfs and audio files that are in the public domain, and we'd like to be able to upload them into the Populi library without having to link to another server.
We added a resource field called "Link" and updated many resource fields to auto-link URLs.
Populi's library backend is based on Dublin Core. In Dublin Core it's most appropriate to have, for example, a resource type of Sound which then links to an electronic resource, and possibly even physical copies of that resource. So I don't think we'll add "electronic resource" as a type, but handling electronic resources better in Library is definitely on our radar as something we can improve. For now, hopefully the Link field will come in handy.
For electronic holdings, it would also be great if the "link" or "URL" could override the library location or requirement for a barcode in the resource's catalog record.
In addition to the link field Populi's library now allows you to upload files to resources.
