Allow Students to View "Active" Courses in the Course Catalog

I would like to request that students be able to view the "Active" courses in the Course Catalog. With this capability, the students will be able to see the prerequisites required for particular courses, read course descriptions, and see the typical pattern of offerings for instances of the course (e.g. every spring semester, fall semesters every 2nd year, etc).

This feature will also save the school trying to produce a separate academic calalogue with all of the prerequisites correctly copied from the Populi course catalog.

  This is a good idea. Another thing that is frustrating is that students who are not registered in a course cannot see the course description or syllabus for that course before they register.

  I'm not sure if this feature request is somewhere else (and I can certainly re-post it somewhere else), but would it be possible to have the courses open for everyone to see while registration is open? Then, after drop/add, it could be closed so that only students registered could see the discussions, assignments, etc.

  @Deborah - Course Info pages are visible to all users at all times. During registration students can link directly to the Info page for any course instance they are able to register for by clicking on its name.

  Ah, I didn't know that had changed.That only applies to students in that particular program, though, not to all students.

  One problem that I was trying to address is that our librarian cannot see the course syllabi when the professors post it (she needs to see them to see what books should be reserved), so I was thinking that if everyone could see those, at least during registration, then that would help us.

  The only other option we have to fix this is to give her registrar rights, but that involves some FERPA violations, so we can't do it.Any other ideas? If I give her a student role, I would need to put her into every program and she would have a student ID. Seems clunky.

  Anyway, I'm sorry for hijacking this thread with related issues.

  @Debora - All users can access all course info pages though search. 

  If your instructors add their books to their courses then all of them can be seen on the term book list page found at yourpopulidomain/bookstore > Admin. Your librarian will need the Bookstore Admin role to visit this page.

  Just out of curiosity, what part of FERPA would be violated by giving your librarian Registrar access?

  Thanks! I didn’t know you could search and find it, although she would need a list to search for every class, or else she wouldn’t know what to look for. It’s good to know that there is a way around it, at least.

   

  The librarian has no reason to see student grades, and if we give her registrar rights, she will have access to them, so this would violate FERPA regulations.
