Importing Test Questions

It would be very handy to allow test questions to be imported into Populi.  Textbooks have often provided test questions & answers for the professors to use but now publishers are making use of software that allows the professors to convert the given test questions & answers to some popular formats (Moodle, blackboard, etc.)  see http://www.respondus.com/products/demos.shtml.  

This means a professor can get easily upload tests to sites like blackboard & moodle without having to re-write out all the questions.

One of the primary formats that has been established is the generic xml specification called QTI (the IMS Question and Test Interoperability specification).  If Populi could import and export to this format I think they would be well ahead in the game.  Not only would it allow uploading material made available from publishers, but Populi could use it to transfer tests from one course to another, or have a central repository of 'tests' sorted by course, term, faculty, etc., that only had to consist of these xml files.

  I like the idea of the xml spec, but I would be just as happy at this point with import/export to Excel or csv.

  Wanting to come back to this. I am open to Excel, csv, or xml, but really like the idea. The idea of a central repository is also a good one.

  This is to emphasize the need for exporting tests created with Diploma into Populi. As many already know, "rtf" exam files created with Diploma cannot be exported into a populi test. The only option available with populi is copying and pasting questions under the populi test tab, which is not time efficient.

  An import function would save me hours of time. Having to copy and paste and set up each answer individually is killing me.

  Populi now supports importing test questions (and more!) via Common Cartridge. Go to the course info tab, click the gear icon and select "Import Common Cartridge" to get started. You can read more about Common Cartridge here:

  Hey,

  I'm trying to figure this out.  I'm using Cengage Learning - specifically Cognero Test Generator.  I see that I can export Cognero XML, Angel 7.1, Blackboard 7.1, Respondus 3.5, and QTI Standard.  I saved as XML, then followed the directions posted by Toby (above).  I uploaded them, but got an error message. 

  Am I missing something?

  I agree. I have hundreds of questions of tests from the Trail Guide to the Body that can be imported into Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard, but they cannot be imported into Populi. It's really frustrating that we have to spend hours and hours doing work when the publishers have done everything they can to make this easy for us AND I can't use my own test bank exports from Moodle from other programs that I teach in. It seems like this should be a priority issue.

  Bex Groebner - This feature request was marked Completed some time ago. Populi supports QTI, Common Cartridge, GIFT, and AIKEN question imports. If you can't get your questions in one of those common formats from your publisher or from Moodle I would recommend asking them about that. If you have questions in one of those formats, or would like assistance figuring out any possible workarounds please reach out to Populi Support.
