Discussion posts are presently limited to 5000 characters and comments on Discussion posts are limited to 1000 characters. I know that you do not currently have a setting to increase the limit, but I request that you seriously consider doing so. In dealing with either Theological or philosophical topics, the discussion can become quite lengthy, certainly exceeding 5000 characters significantly.

John Ferch Agreed. Especially in online classes, where the online discussion is meant to take the place of classroom interaction, character limits are a major concern.

John Ferch Also, if it is not possible to increase the character limit, then the text input field should at least be configured to provide a count of remaining characters as a person types, and it should not allow the user to exceed the character limit. Presently, it seems that any text that exceeds the character limit is simply cut off completely. I lost a few paragraphs of text that I had typed in response to a student's question in this way.

Adam Sentz @John - We significantly increased the length of discussion post comments a while ago. I just did a test on the live site myself and didn't have any problem adding a comment or a reply to that comment that was around 100,000 characters long.
Discussions topics themselves are, however, still limited to 5000 characters (which we can definitely think about changing)

Adam Sentz Maybe you're referring to the Bulletin Board and not Discussions? Bulletin board posts are limited to 5,000 characters and replies to 1,000.

John Ferch Yes, this must be the issue. I will direct my students to use the discussions for longer posts. To this point we had been using the class bulletin board as a "generic" discussion board for basic Q&A. I did not realize there was a technical distinction between the two. Thanks for the quick reply!

Adam Sentz No problem. We can look into loosening the others up as well.

As Paul suggested regarding our school's significantly lengthly theological or philosophical responses, I would like to request that Populi Developers increase the character limit for newly added discussions. This Fall term, we implemented the practice of having students post their responses as a new discussion. However, since their initial response does not fit, some have adopted the practice of posting their response as two separate discussions. We want our students to post only one discussion with their response.
I am instructing students to post up-to 5000 characters first, then post the remainder of their response under their initial response by leaving a comment. Would you please consider bumping the 5000 character limit to the Topic of newly added discussions to a higher character limit? In our case of students adding their own discussions for their responses, I think tripling the current limit would significantly help.
Thank you for your consideration.

Adam Sentz Bulletin boards now have a 50,000 per post character limit, and discussions have a 250,000 per post character limit.

Thanks, Adam! In the case of the character limit to the Topic of newly added discussions, has this limit been increased also?
-
Adam Sentz @Raul - Yes. It is 250,000 characters.
