Creating a Student Portfolio

It would be great if a "Portfolio" tab could be added to each of the students where they themselves are able to submit the following:

1) Major paper/project for each or select courses

2) Graded rubrics for courses

3) Checklist for degree progress

4) Any other files pertinent to their portfolio

This could then be accessed by the academic dean, registrar, and the students' advisers. It would be a great "one-stop" place that the students' advisers could visit in Populi and very quickly give informed advise on academic progress and future planning.

  Like Johnathon Beeke's request, I'm looking for a place students could upload about 6-10 documents that could be reviewed by a faculty adviser prior to graduation.

  I think Files could work for this with some modifications. I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement. I imagine students creating a folder titled "Student Portfolio" (in which the student's name or initials replace the word "student." Then they would upload their required portfolio docs to this location. Finally, rather than sharing each document individually with their adviser, the student would share the folder with his/her adviser.

  Is there a way to add a share option to a folder rather than just the individual docs? I think that would be the key to this working. If it's too complicated to pull off (or too low a priority in the queue of things Populi staff are working on), I can imagine a way to do this via Box.com. I'd just prefer to keep it in Populi!

  We have been trying to determine a place to collect and store student portfolio's for awhile now. Keeping the portfolio in Populi together with the student's file would be great!

  This is one of the features that we are looking to outside sources because Populi does not currently have the functionality. It would be great to be able to keep this all in one place.

  E-portfolio discussion just came up at an assessment meeting.  It would be great if we could use Populi for this - every student has his/her own portfolio folder with access by advisors and other administrators as needed.

  We have created a "Portfolio course" in Populi. We created a new term "Portfolio" so that the course stays open throughout their program. Students are enrolled in the course based on their first term of enrollment. Adivsors are added to the course as faculty. It's not ideal, but it's a functional work around. [BTW, my first 16 years in online education came at a seminary, Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, so I do understand the context that many of you are working in. If that helps, feel free to be in touch.]

  We too are currently looking to outside sources to provide this service, which is not ideal.

  I will also say that a Portfolio feature should provide more options for instruction, student reflection, and student presentation of their work that a simple file storage system would allow. As ePortfolios become more and more standard, the standards are rising with their popularity.

  We would also like a portfolio option. Currently we use Google docs to lodge our documents. Since our degree audits are contained in a Google spreadsheet where we can control that the registrar office personnel are the only persons who can edit the spreadsheet and others can view it, we would need those capabilities in Populi. The edit/view access is the key - we would need to assign access by person, not by role.

  We still need this. I tried to do it by making a class but that has issues.

  I agree. The work-around of making the portfolio as a class is not the best. I think a separate tab labelled "Portfolio" under each student (with opportunity for file uploads, notes on students, etc.) would be the best.

  Can someone from Populi comment if this functionality is even feasible? In other words, should I keep hoping that this might become a glorious reality, or should I gloomily go google other grotesque (I had to come up with a "g") options?

  Jonathon Beeke - Certainly feasible, and there's certainly interest. We'll be looking at this more as we look to expand Populi's assessment functionality. It's not coming soon so unfortunately, if you need something right now, you'll have to continue to use a workaround or something more grotesque.

  As dean of students, we have a capstone project and which will run as one course the whole time the student is enrolled. So each semester they meet with their faculty advisor, these meetings would be nice to store online, they have three papers to complete and several videos to view but they have 2 years to complete this. This is in addition to their regular courses they are taking each semester. It would be nice to have one course per degree that would permit us to do this. I do not know if this makes sense? As of now it seems populi is not able to do this.

  Adam Sentz - Coming back to this again with hopes of something developing on this.

  If the functionality of "Groups" could be used and placed as a tab for each student, and then renamed as "Portfolio," this would cover all that was necessary! Just a thought......

  This could be a helpful idea towards competency based education within Populi, which is becoming a need for many schools today.
