Currently, we use Populi for course management but a different site to serve as a Student Portal. We've set up the student portal as a community place where students can post study guides, discuss various topics in forum format such as housing, selling used books,etc. We would really like to have this community "space" to live inside of Populi.
Populi already has forum-ready features built in. For example, the "lessons" & "discussion" tabs within each course is itself a forum. New forum topics can act as "lessons" and discussions can follow.
Populi could duplicate these features & reorganized the layout (ie. discussions to be organized inside of a "lesson" - similar to how typical forums look & operate), it could produce a nice forum. The forum would then be public or act similar to a "course" where students can freely "enroll" or enter and subscribe to different topics. Additionally, this forum could be added as one of the main tab.
Although this sounds easy, it could be difficult to execute so I understand if it's a down the road project.
