Our library uses the dewey decimal system, which has a dewey classification number PLUS a call made of three letters; the first three letters of the author's name OR the first three letters of the title if an editor put the book together, distinct from an 'author'. The option you give is the author's last name or the 'authors names', neither of which belong in the call number and does not match our library label system. Usually the spine call# looks like this:

another helpful label item we now use is the copy #, not essential but our system labels place it just below the call #, Vol # is also optional for reference labels for a four field spine label, as follows...
