Custom Notifications for Discussions

Being involved with discussions on Populi would be much more simple if students could get custom notifications. In other words, a student would to be notified only when someone responds to their post, or if someone responds to their comment. It would also be helpful if you could respond directly to a specific comment and not just on the original post. Thank you for your time!
