If a student withdraws from the school mid-semester, we would like to filter them out of our school-wide mailings. For example, if a student leaves or is suspended for academic, financial, or disciplinary reasons, there is no way to avoid sending them the school-wide emails unless you export the list and remove people individually. Because we want all correspondence to appear in each student's activity feed, this is not the best option.

Adam Sentz @Katie - Perhaps I don't understand the problem. If you send an email to the Student role only those with active Student role's will be emailed. Another option, if you never want to email a particular address, is to edit that address in the Info section of a profile and check the "No Mailings" box. If you want you could send us a support request and walk us through what you are trying to do and what exactly isn't working for you and we can see if we can't find a workflow that will solve it.
