Edit or turn off automatic grading

In the test feature, could we be given the option of turning auto-grading on/off.   I have a few assignments where I am using the test features in some admittedly unusual ways (ex. to report reading assignments), but I am not using the auto-graded scores. I already know this in advance. So I tell my students to ignore their initial score because I will be going in an editing all the grades. it works, but it is a bit confusing at times for students. However, if I could still use features like multiple choice, true/false, list-ordering but just turn the auto-grading off, that would work fine.

I think it's already been suggested that we be able to edit the scoring systems used on auto-graded questions, and that would be ideal. However, even just the ability to turn auto-grading off would be great..

  Hello Brad. I looked up one of your courses and using short answer or essay might get you what you want. Those can both be manually graded. Would that work? Do you want to schedule a phone call to talk it through?

  I am aware of that and may switch to that option in the future. I had just thought it would be convenient for the student to be able to use the multiple-choice "just click on your answer" type of response. But, if that won't work, I'll just go all short answer. No problem.

  I also ran a chronology quiz (put these events in order), and it seems like Populi grades by matching responses with their corresponding event number. This means that if a student puts just one event in the wrong place early in their sequence, all answers after that are also marked wrong even though they are actually ordered properly (the one wrong event notwithstanding).  While I accept that this is a legitimate way to grade such questions, I do not always want to use that system.  It would be nice if I could still give them a chronological order question, but in some cases just turn off auto-grading and grade it myself using my own rubric.

  I'm not sure if we'll decide to build this feature in (we'll mark it Planned if we decide to start working on it), but for now I do think it would be best to go the short answer route. I know that isn't the best option for what you're looking for but I'm hoping the short answer or essay option will be a close second best.

  For the put in order questions, you are exactly right. That was brought to our attention a little while ago and we're almost ready to release a fix for it. I think we're still testing it before we get it out there. Stay tuned.

  Yup. I can work with that. i know I'm kind of using the test feature more as a "report" feature more than a test feature, so I'll just modify how I set it up next time.

  That looks great. Wow, a lot of hard work. Thank you guys for tackling that!!

  I have an online test that is currently in progress (some students have already written, some have yet to write, the window closes today). Is this new grading system in operation now and will it apply to my current test ? Will it regrade tests that have already been auto-graded? Will it apply to those tests that were written after the upgrade was implemented? 

  I'm assuming that it won't have any affect on a test that's already in progress, and that's fine. I'm just curious as to when this modification kicks in.

  @Brad - The new method is live now. This means that any put-in-order question that is automatically graded will be graded using the new method. Questions that have already been graded will not be regraded. Of course changing methodology means that it's possible that the same question response could be graded two different ways before and after the update which isn't ideal, but having to go through and fix the grades, like you mentioned, wasn't ideal either. Hopefully the new methodology will prevent, or greatly reduce, the need to manually regrade the questions. For tests in progress I'd recommend just continuing to manually regrade the responses that were submitted before the update.

  Or, in the alternative, is there a way to choose 0 points for any tests or assignments, and replace it with submitted instead of points allocation?

  Otherwise, what I found as the only other option, is to mark the assignment as extra credit, which is still a little confusing to students without clarification, which is added.
