Additional or custom variables in email/letter templates

We would like to see additional variables added to the options that can be merged into email templates. At present, we'd like to be able to add advisor, details about missing items from an application (e.g. references), and certain academic fields and details such as program, degree, enrollment status, term dates, and expected graduation date.
