Ability to update usernames via API

I don't see a way to update someone's username without deleting and re-creating it in two API calls. Can we add a feature to update usernames in one call? It also appears if we change the username and then we want to change it back it does not let us VIA API without going into populi and allowing that previous username to be available again. Probably a rare case but it could happen and that's where having an updating username API call would be useful. I realize that there maybe safety concerns involved in terms of account take over, however the use case would be where Populi would be the SP not the IDP so any kind of safety measures would be handled by our system.
