Course Evaluation Reporting Availability

Greetings! 

We have relatively small class sizes (sometimes, just two students). These small sizes often make it difficult for 60% of the course evaluations to be met, and therefore faculty are unable to view the evaluation results on their own. As the Academic Admin and Registrar, it creates more work for me to distribute each evaluation that hasn't met that threshold (since it's a majority of our courses). 

 

Could there be a feature to just make the evaluation available once the course is finalized? As the person who would be the only one to unfinalize the course, this would be a lot simpler, overall.

  I agree, we are also small and don't have the staff to manually produce and mail reports to faculty.

  I propose the availability options simply change to the following:

   

  Unavailable

  Available

  Available when 60% completed

  Available when course is locked

  We would also like to see options as Donna has proposed. In our first semester of using Course Evaluations within Populi, I am having to manually download 24 evaluation reports and provide them directly to faculty, because their response rates did not meet the 60% threshold. Half of these 24 even had response rates between 50% and 59%. Smaller classes make it even more difficulty to meet the 60% threshold (4 students out of 7, 5 students out of 9, 7 students out of 13, and so on). I can appreciate the desire for anonymity, but if the results are not available until after the course is locked anyway, then it is a moot point.

  We also would like more options. It shouldn't be too terrible to add a field with a percentage between 1 - 100 that runs the calculation instead- we are also a very small school.

  I would also like to see the ability to do more than one evaluation per course. Our Faculty like to use a short Eval at midpoint for to check on efficacy.

  I agree!!! Please change the settings so faculty can see their evaluations when the course is finalized regardless of what percentage completed the evaluations. The whole point of evaluations is for the teacher to get feedback; they can't get that feedback if they can't see the evaluations. We all know students don't like to complete evaluations so it's hard to get 60%.

  Christopher Sumpter - What Molly and I have stated is correct. You can choose for faculty to only view results at either 60% completion or 60% completion AND the course is finalized. Ideally, course finalization would suffice for my institution for faculty to be able to view any evaluation results.

  Yes, you are correct. I think small class sizes is exactly the reason why Populi has those guidelines in place, though. When there are only two students in the class and the professor can see what one student said, it really reduces the anonymity of the course evaluation and increases the tendency of the student to skew evaluations more positively.

  Christopher Sumpter But, if the course is already finalized, faculty cannot unfinalize the course (only the Registrar can do that). And, it would have the same impact for any other course evaluation format. However, with the current settings in Populi, there are so many additional steps to take to get faculty course evaluations to faculty. 
  
  And, this isn't just for a two person course, but if 4/8 or 5/10 students respond, you run into the same issue. I just think a finalized course setting ONLY would be extremely helpful for many institutions, and other can maintain the 60% AND finalized setting.

  Agree with Jessalynn Cornett. And I'd bet that classes with just 2 people enrolled are pretty rare, Christopher Sumpter.

  Christopher Sumpter Just an example, but the statistical issue remains in our larger courses, as well. About twice a year I have an independent study with two students, we still need faculty to access those evaluations.

  Has there been any update on this from Populi? I don't see any response here from them. We are also a small school and are running into trouble with this.

  Leanne Kuizenga - We've put some work into figuring out what changes we can make based on the feedback we have received, but it's not in "active" development right now.

  Yes, I totally agree with this thread.  We need an option to allow faculty to view evaluations even if 60% haven't been completed.  Perhaps an option would be to make them available by a certain date?  The current options just aren't feasible for small classes, and the work-around adds a lot of administrative work.
