Yes, please!
Yes, I agree. This would be helpful.
Yes. This functionality is needed. There needs to be a way to manually and randomly create work groups for group assignments.
Agree. It would be nice to set up assignments and indicate which student gets that assignment. Example: 48 people in the class. 12 chapters with a subject to be assigned from each chapter. So 4 students get Chapter 1 subject assignment. Another 4 students get Chapter 2 subject assignment and so on.
I would strongly support the suggestion that Populi create the capacity to easily divide students into small groups. In the former LMS I used, dividing students into groups was quick to create and deepened the interaction among a smaller group of students - thus deepening the learning.. I changed the groupings several times during the course. I miss this feature as it limits the way students participate and learn from one another in a meaningful way.
Yes please! This would be a very useful feature that we would use!
This would be fantastic. It's virtually impossible to have meaningful discussion forums with 75-100 students in a course.
We want this but for purpose if TA’s managing their own region of students and not having to go through the whole gradebook to find their 7 students.
I definitely would love to see a functionality for this added to Populi. This would make it easier and convenient for grading group assignments (especially assignments that are in parts) so I don't just have to make each student submit the same document separately.
Yes. Please make this a priority. Small group discussions are very important for online learning because it greatly increases engagement. Integrating small groups into the course function itself will save the administrative nightmare for profs. We just switched from Canvas to Populi LMS and this is one major deficiency that we found in Populi.
Yes! My previous LMS called what I need "teams", which is very different from Populi's "groups" function. I want the ability to assign a number of students in a course to a team with properties such as:
- a team submits one assignment instead of each student submitting copies
- I grade the team, and each student receives that grade (I can edit a single student grade if necessary)
- I can send messages to members of a team, and the team can send messages to me
- Perhaps it would be useful to create and grade assignments unique to a team
- Teams can create discussion boards unique to team members
- It might be useful for me to create File folders available only to members of a certain team
Yes! We would love something similar at our school. Especially the ability for a TA or specific faculty member to manage the group and their assignments. Ideally making it easier for all involved to keep track of assignments turned in.
This feature would be extremely useful if it were tied to grading and student submissions. Instructors would then issue a grade for one student in the group who submitted the assignment, and all students would be issued that grade at the same time.
Thanks Adam Sentz
I'll contribute there as well.
This is currently a showstopper for us moving to Populi LMS. (I don't know that it's the only showstopper, but I haven't delved much further upon encountering this one.)
I agree too. Would it even be possible to take this idea and break it down further to have individual private blog posts or make individual discussions private so they could function as a blog/discussion between student and professor so they could journal and save paper?
I agree! We need this function to assign assignment for specific students in different times!
What also interests me in this is that I am an MLIS student at a university that uses another LMS and their LMS environment allows for student groups that can be changed up for different discussion groups so they can be changed around for each discussion or whatever, depending on the instructor's desired outcome for that particular desire. I'd like to see Populi compete with some features.
Also, I'd like to see some better editing features on the text box for the discussion board. I have received complaints from a couple students who are more advanced than I in computer science and they said they don't like how they have to edit text to make things bold or italic. I think, IIRC, when I was a student, the text editor in populi was more like the editor here, but it seems different in the LMS now. Maybe I am confused.
Please create a function whereby students can be placed into study groups for discussions, grading, etc. Classes above 20 students become cluttered and unmanageable with discussion threads that require scrolling and scrolling. Student groups would help form community among students because it would give more exposure to a smaller number of people instead of shallow exposure to an overwhelming number of strangers.
Isaiah Allen - This is definitely on "the roadmap."
It'd be great to have a functionality where students could be divided into groups in the roster. It would also be helpful if the gradebook could then sort the contents according to these groups (not just a long list of all the enrolled students sorted purely by "Last name" as it currently is). Then, Advisors or TA's who only need access to the group of students they're responsible for, will be able to see their group immediately when they open the gradebook.
We would use this as well. Presently, our need is to offer multiple discussion sections associated with a class and charge fees for enrollment. We have two versions: a live, synchronous section, and a section that only has the recordings of the live section and has a lower fee.
I was just wondering if there has been any progress in creating student groups within a course. Currently, I have to double multiple entry grades for students in the same group, which is time-consuming! I can see this request started in 2019, and it is 2024 now...:(
