TLDR: We would like a setting where retaken courses count in cumulative GPA up until the point that they are retaken, but not after.
Long-form:
(For the purpose of this discussion, I assume a student takes a course, performs poorly, then takes it again in a later term and achieves an improved mark. Obviously this is not always the case, but my proposal below should achieve the desired result even in other cases.)
Academics > Settings > General has the setting "Count retakes in term cumulative GPA" with the options "Yes" and "No." "Yes" means a Retake (a course that has been retaken) will continue to count in the cumulative GPA for all terms. "No" means a Retake will not count towards the cumulative GPA of any term.
At our institution, a Retake no longer affects cumulative GPA after it is retaken. Thus, "No" gives us the accurate current cumulative GPA. However, it also changes historical cumulative GPAs prior to the term in which the course was retaken, causing them to ignore the retaken course. This means they do not accurately reflect what the student's cumulative GPA was at the end of that term, until we reach the term where the course was retaken.
We would appreciate an option that causes the Retake to be factored in to cumulative GPA until the term in which it is retaken, at which point the course that "replaces" it will be used for cumulative GPA moving forward.
