It would be helpful to have the ability to hide faculty from student view. There are times where we need senior faculty to observe what is going on in a class for a period of time, but we don't want to undermine the current instructor and send a negative message to students.

Toby Robinson Official comment You can now set faculty to "hidden" in a Populi course.

Adam Sentz Ginger Howell - Perhaps you could give them the Academic Auditor role?
-
Ginger Howell Oh, that will make them not visible? That's a good workaround.

Ginger Howell OK. I talked to our register about this a bit more. On the surface, this may be a good work around, but an academic auditor will have access to all courses. This is fine for our core faculty, but when an adjunct needs to observe a how a class is taught, this gives them way more access than what makes us feel comfortable.
It would be REALLY helpful to have an "Observers" section in the Settings tab. For example, I'm added to each online class, because I'm in all the classes frequently. That method helps me be efficient, because it compiles all the online classes in the "Courses" section on my Home page. But sometimes being added as faculty is confusing for students and they ask me questions, although I am not marked as the primary instructor.
Additionally, when we add instructors to other courses to observe and forget to take them out, it slows down the work of our register when she runs reports. Everyone who is observing shows up as an instructor and it confuses our school's president, and no one wants to do that! :)
An "Observers" section could solve this issue. You could have icons that would allow people to choose to be visible or invisible. Additionally, you could have an option of whether to allow the observer to have "edit" permissions or "read-only" permissions. I definitely need to be able to edit, but in many cases we don't want people to be active in the course.
Please consider this function.

Lauren Guthrie - Registrar Weighing in from another school. We second this suggestion. It would be VERY helpful at our university too.

Katrina Beaver Question from our institution's Registrar's office - do "hidden" or "read only" faculty show up in a course evaluation for the students? We want to utilize this feature in a course for a teacher in training, but want to make sure they do not accidentally show up as part of the course evaluation for the course when students complete their evals at the end of the semester.
