I find that when I have students email me their short responses to books and then their final paper, it significantly clogs up my inbox (which didn't really need that help), and it increases the chances that I might miss or misplace a submission. As I read through their submissions, I then need to toggle back and forth from my email to Populi in order to enter grades and comments.

Wouldn't it be swell, I thought, if the students could email their submission straight to Populi? Or, failing that, if I could forward their submissions to that spot. Wouldn't this make the world a more wonderful place?

  Douglas Wilson - Having students email you their course work certainly does sound less than ideal! I'd recommend having them upload their response to a File type assignment or having them enter it directly into an Essay type - whichever is more appropriate. Then you could just click through and grade the new submissions without having to go back and forth to your email.

  Implementing an assignment submission email dropbox would be pretty complicated in the first place, but actually using it would require something like a unique email address per student per assignment and per faculty per assignment which you'd each have to know in order for your upload, forward, or response to go to the right place. Otherwise, with a single dropbox address, you'd have to use a very particular, machine-readable email subject or file attachment naming convention. Either of those options seems less usable compared to the existing interface.
