Having the attendance page blank instead of defaulting to Present being selected. It's very easy for teachers to lose track of who they have marked or not.

Adam Sentz @Carissa - Present is the default because the vast majority of the time (85%) students are marked Present. Perhaps you could start by switching everyone to Excused or Tardy with the All Excused or All Tardy link so you can keep track of which ones you have marked.
