Need to ability to 1) assign different meetings for cross-listed courses or 2) have the ability to turn conflicts off for individual courses in order to resolve schedule conflicts when students are engaged in online enrollment.
Background: Current system parameters for cross-listed courses assume that all courses are taught at the same time at the same location. However, the use of digital technology and the increase use of Distance Education programs allows for varied physical scenarios and meeting times to be offered in one live fixed time course with one non-live course with flexible times.
Students that have a conflict with two campus course meeting days and times may opt to take an online course to avoid the schedule conflict. However if the campus course is cross-listed with an online course the student will not be able to enroll as the system indicates a "schedule conflict." If we disable the global conflict option, then many more problems may result.
Desired Solution: Some institutions are beginning to cross-list campus and online courses to accommodate one teacher in a combined course environment so that the total number of enrolled students in the subject better meets minimum enrollment requirements. In this way, one or both courses need not be cancelled for lack of enrollment numbers.
If an institution could list meeting times for campus separate from online courses this would open greater flexibility in instructor-student engagement at lower cost to the institution.
An alternative is to be able to turn conflicts off by course when the course is an online offering. This would be an individual versus a global "course conflict" feature.
Finally, I realize this may create an issue related to attendance keeping.
